What do you mean by “IPv6 address field is 128bit”?

Answered by: Izumi Miki (Impress Corp.) Bit is the unit of information handled by computers. It is expressed in binary number. “128bit” is 128 in binary expression, which is 2 to the 128th power, or: 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 128bit can create this many unique numbers. IPv6 address is expressed in 128bit. Therefore, there can be so many unique IPv6 addresses theoretically. ...

Is it possible to simultaneously have an IPv4 and an IPv6 address?

Yes. Most of the operating systems currently supporting IPv6 also support IPv4, hence allowing for the simultaneous use of the two protocols. In this way, it is possible to communicate with both IPv4 and IPv6 networks instead of being restricted to one type of network only. In addition, the support of both protocols will permit the use of applications that are specifically designed to work with only one of the two protocols.

Why Miredo does not set a global Teredo IPv6 address for Teredo relays?

Teredo relays are not supposed to have a global Teredo IPv6 address. Because they don’t perform Teredo qualification and maintenance , they can’t reliably determine a valid Teredo address anyway. Teredo relays MUST have a non-Teredo global IPv6 address, otherwise, there are not electible as relay. In other words, Teredo relays must have an IPv6 connectivity besides their Teredo tunnel, such as a native IPv6 attachment, a 6to4 pseudo-tunnel or a point-to-point IPv6 tunnel. ...

Can I receive IPv6 address space to aid my IPv6 research and development?

If you are a RIPE NCC member, you can apply for an experimental assignment. Please see the IPv6 Address Allocation and Assignment Policy for more information. If you are not a RIPE NCC member, you can obtain IPv6 address space from your upstream provider.

What does IPv6 mean for address space?

Though the IPv6 address space is only four times that of IPv4, it means the number of available unique IPv6 Internet addresses — which define where systems and devices are on the network and how data packets get from one place to another — totals 3.4 x 1038 (or 10 to the 38th power). The 4 billion addresses available under IPv4 could be completely consumed in the next several years. With IPv6, however, each person on Earth could theoretically have 50 octillion, or 5 x 1028, unique addresses. ...

I heard IPv6 address blocks have to be returned. Is that true?

Answered by: Izumi Miki (Impress Corporation) End-user sites or individuals don't get direct allocation of IPv6 address blocks by the Internet Registries, just as they won't get IPv4 addresses allocated directly at present. Your ISP allocates network portion of IPv6 address (network prefix) to your homes or organizations. Therefore, it could be said that end users are only borrowing network prefixes from ISPs. You have to return IPv6 address range you have used when you stop using the ISP. ...

Can I get an IPv6 address?

If you run your own website you can ask your hosting company about them to see if you can get one for your site. Many net hosting and domain firms are starting to offer them alongside IPv4 addresses. If you own a PC running Vista or a Mac with OS/X installed then you could already be using IPv6. Both operating systems can handle IPv6 addresses and will use them if they are presented to them. However, at the moment few sites have got an IPv6 address so that ability of those operating systems may never have been called upon.

Will I really get a /64 IPv6 address segment with every server hosting service?

The IPv6 address segment is bound to the client, not the service. If you order any server housing program, you will receive your segment of IPv6 addresses. No additional IPv6 address segment will be provided if you order one or more additional housing programs.
